THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED
A FICTIONAL CREATION
BY CHAMBRAY BLUE
I had taken the wrong road. Surely this winding back road would bring me out to the main highway. I tried not to worry, but perspiration beads formed quickly on my forehead, and I found myself wiping away the sweat while trying my best to stay focused. I ran off the road once. I guess I got carried away with speed and the anticipation of finding my way out of this road to nowhere. The car's clock showed 7:35 PM. Nightfall.
She said the second road on the right after making the turn onto this road. The first right turn was about three miles back. I would never agree to go to someone's house again after purchasing something online. This journey was scary. Who would live out here?
Could this be the right turn? I slowed my car down and pulled off the road. I wish I would have gotten her number; I could have called her. I'll call Jeff. My boyfriend never answered because the call dropped. I only had one bar, and it was iffy. Okay. So I will assume this is the right.
First, a drizzle hit against the windshield, and then the heavens opened, raining hard all around me. After bouncing over the rocky path to a tiny cabin where I could see a minute flicker of light, I pulled myself from my car and knocked on the door.
It seemed the future was my present as I felt a bit confused. I wondered how in these backwoods she could even get internet service to sell online. I followed her lead to the back room where she had the goods. That is the last thing I remember.
I awoke in the morning to a new day. The road was still there, waiting for me to tackle it. She was gone. I'm not sure she was ever there. It could have been my mind playing tricks on me. It could be that my imagination is running away from me, just as I ran away from the asylum yesterday.
